2022 EHA Meeting Highlights from LaCrosse, WI

This year‘s meeting‘s theme is Love and Toil, Care and Work

While Adam Smith defined economics in terms of wealth creation and Lionel Robbins in terms of limited means and unlimited ends, Alfred Marshall thought of it as ‘…a study of men (sic) as they live and move and think in the ordinary business of life’. Nothing could be more ordinary than caring. It takes place all the time and all around us. It involves diverse tasks, which can be commercialised but are often unpaid, although sometimes very labour intensive. Care can be provided domestically, or in the community, but today it is increasingly globalised. Most importantly, care adds significantly to wellbeing, and simultaneously enhances productivity.

The Steel City provides a solid backdrop for diving into this year‘s underlying thesis.

See you in Pittsburgh, September 8-10, 2023.

ABOUT THE EHA

The Economic History Association was founded in 1940. Its purpose is to encourage and promote teaching, research, and publication on every phase of economic history, broadly defined, and to encourage and assist in the preservation and administration of the materials for research in economic history.

EHA AT A GLANCE

The Association publishes The Journal of Economic History and a Newsletter, and holds an annual meeting (usually in September). Research is supported through Arthur H. Cole grants-in-aid.

EHA AWARDS SEVERAL ANNUAL PRIZES

The Association awards several prizes for publications: the Arthur Cole Prize for an outstanding article published in the Journal each year; the Alice Hanson Jones prize for an outstanding book published biennially in American economic history; the Gyorgi Ranki prize for an outstanding book published biennially in non-American economic history; and the Lindert-Williamson prize for an outstanding Book in global, African, Asian, Australian, and/or South American economic history.
