History of Finance and Financial Institutions in the Asia-Pacific Rim.

The internationally-refereed journal, //Accounting, Business & Financial

pleased to announce its sponsorship of a workshop to be held at the
University of Sydney.
The subject of the University of Sydney workshop will be: `History of
Finance and Financial Institutions in the Asia-Pacific Rim. The
Asia-Pacific Rim is the home to the most diverse and fastest growing
financial systems in the world. The papers must be historically informed.
Issues include
Banks and insurance in developing economies
Globalisation
The role of government regulation
Private vs. State banking systems
The management of financial institutions
The development of financial markets including derivatives and bonds
The role of foreign banks
Approaches to borrowing and lending including hire purchase
Community banking and social movements in financial services
Non-bank financial sector
Changing patterns of ownership
Accounting and calculative practices within financial institutions
All papers presented at the symposium will be considered for publication
in a special edition of //Accounting, Business and Financial History
<http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/09585206.asp> //to appear in due
course. The local organisers would welcome expressions of interest from
anyone thinking of offering a paper for the workshop. The deadline for
submission of full papers, which must be written in English, is 31
August 2006. It is anticipated that the final selection of papers for
the workshop will be made by the middle of October 2006, with authors
being contacted as soon as possible after this time with respect to
acceptance or otherwise of their paper.
The workshop is organised by the Business and Labour History Group,
School of Business, University of Sydney. All enquiries regarding the

Business of the Chinese Diaspora: Call for Papers
Paper proposals on the theme of the Business of the Chinese Diaspora
are invited for panels at two conferences in 2007. Selected papers will
be invited to submit to review for a special issue of the </Australian
Economic History Review/>, expected to be published in early 2008. The
conferences are:
* Asia-Pacific Economic and Business History Conference (APEBH), the
University of Sydney, 12-14 Feb, 2007. Details on the conference

* Chinese Studies Association of Australia (CSAA) Biennial
Conference, Griffith University, Brisbane, 27-29 June 2007. More

The APEBH Conference theme is Varieties of Capitalist Development and
Corporate Governance, and the keynote speaker is Professor Doug Irwin,
a US-based leading authority on the history of international trade policy.
Paper proposals for either or both conferences are welcome on any topic
related to the business organisation and practices of the Chinese
Diaspora, from the nineteenth century to the present (contemporary
papers should have an historical dimension). Contributions might be on
topics such as country- or region-specific studies of Chinese
businesses; biographies of Chinese entrepreneurs; business networks and
community organisation of the Chinese; intra- and inter-regional
business ties; investment of the Overseas Chinese in China; the
Chinese-language business press in host countries; comparative Diaspora
business (Indian, Vietnamese and Chinese).
Paper proposals should include a one-page abstract and a one-page
curriculum vitae (cv). The abstract should summarize the argument of the
paper, the sources on which it is based, and its relationship to
existing scholarship. Proposals for the APEBH Conference are due by *25
November, 2006* and the CSAA *1 March, 2007*.
