Has anyone used the records of prisoners at the Queensland State Archives?
In the days before the Brisbane conference I plan to spend time at the QSA
looking at these records for whatever data they contain about Chinese
immigrants caught up in the judicial system in the late 19th and early
20th centuries. My main interest is in obtaining height data and other
data on native place, birth year, date of arrival in Qld, occupation and
education. The Victorian PRO prison registers contain about 1500 records
of Chinese for the 50 years from 1853, and I use these in a paper for the
conference.
There are several series I have identified that seem promising, including
the series RSI924, SRS22, SRS3693, etc. But there is nothing like advice
from those with first hand experience of using the records.
And if anyone has similar information on prisons for the NSW State Records
or any other state PRO, or holdings of records related to Chinese that
include height data, I would like be interested in hearing from you too.
Thanks in advance.
