Finding Australia's lost and missing government and corporate records.
Colleague,
I am seeking your assistance in compiling a list of significant
Australian government and corporate records that are thought to be lost
or missing. This research forms part of UNESCO's Australian Memory of
the World project specifically examining Australia's Lost and Missing
Documentary Heritage.
I would like you to complete a brief questionnaire to assist with
compiling a list of government and corporate records that are thought to
be lost or missing. The outcome of this project will be an important
list of government and corporate items, collections or areas for further
investigation. These will be publicly available on the web at
http://www.amw.org.au/rlmh/rlmh_reg.htm
In Australia, as in every other country, significant parts of the
documentary heritage have been lost or are missing. It has therefore
become an imperative to document and record what documentary heritage is
known to be lost and what is missing.
Lost heritage is material that is known to no longer survive - its
decay or destruction is reliably documented or can be reliably assumed.
Missing heritage is material whose current whereabouts is unknown, but
whose loss cannot be confirmed or reliably assumed. This material would
have been eligible for inclusion in the Register if it had survived or
was accessible.
The Australian Memory of the World Program aims to heighten awareness
of these issues by establishing and maintaining the Australian Memory of
the World Register (see http://www.amw.org.au/register/amw_reg.htm).
Examples of significant documents already entered onto the register
include:
· The Endeavor Journals of James Cook
· The Mabo Manuscripts
· Landmark Constitutional Documents of the Commonwealth of Australia.
