Having just returned from the HES conference, I
must say that it completely defeated all my
expectations of an economics conference. I had
expected mind-numbing presentations on things
like "the history of mathematics of the
production function," functions that nobody who
actually produces anything actually uses, not
even those who produce production functions. What
I got was a consistently high of level of
intellectually challenging and stimulating
presentations with a real clash of real ideas.
Nearly all the papers that I heard, with the
possible exception of my own, were of a very high
quality, whether from the young scholars or the
old masters. The conference compared well, if not
better, than many theological conferences I
normally attend, and was certainly less dogmatic.
My sincere thanks to Sandra and all who had a
hand in putting together this conference. And to GMU for hosting it.
