There appears to be a clear link between soap shortages and the incidence of scabies, but I am wondering to what extent soap shortages could have had an effect on (overall and child) mortality. Does anybody know a good study which investigates the impact of soap shortages on disease and mortality? Cloth $80. By Graeme Donald Snooks This book offers not only a thorough critique of the Darwinian theory of evolution, but also a realist dynamic theory aimed at replacing it. The resulting "dynamic-strategy" theory is able to explain the dynamics of both life and human society, something that Darwin and the neo-Darwinists were never able to do. The first half of the book exposes the flaws in both the Origin of Species and in the neo-Darwinian synthesis. While Darwin helped divorce science from religion, he was unable to construct a workable dynamic theory of life. Natural selection is merely an artificial algorithm based on an inappropriate farmyard analogy. To make this algorithm "work", Darwin built natural selection around the untenable assumption of the "doctrine of Malthus". A measure of Darwin's failure is his inability to explain the fluctuating fortunes of life's most successful species - mankind. Even neo-Darwinists, who have reworked natural selection using genetic building blocks, have failed this critical test. In addition, their focus on "reproductive success" rather than "survival of the fittest" has given rise to the absurd and non-Darwinian concept of the "selfish gene". Only by rejecting the approaches of both Darwin and the neo-Darwinists and adopting the historical method is it possible to construct a realist theory of life. Essentially this involves systematically observing the patterns in life and human society and developing a general theory to explain them. The resulting dynamic-strategy theory developed in the book's second half views life as a strategic pursuit (rather than a game of chance) in which organisms adopt dynamic strategies (only one of which is genetic change) to survive and prosper. This is achieved through the new concept of "strategic selection", which displaces the "divine selection" of creationists and the "natural selection" of Darwinists. This new theory empowers the individual organism and removes it from the clutches of gods, genes, and blind chance. It also provides a new basis for humanism.
