EH.R: Economic history of taxaton

Colleagues,

I'm looking for bibliography on the history of taxation preferably from the economics perspective.

When did the ruler of the nation go from using his own resources to taxing the resources and activities of others?

My interest is to show how taxation developed along the lines of Buchanan's tax maximization hypothesis.

If, as Buchanan suggests, governments establish and enforce rights to resources to increase the productivity from them, then this innovation, and the associated revenue will figure prominently in government accounts.
