One point possibly not yet made is that a heavier camera in the absence of tripod can aggravate camera shake, especially if you are leaning inconveniently across a table for an extended period (ie many shots).  I have not needed to be anywhere close to full resolution with a 4 megapixel Coolpix in order to obtain good quality shots in reasonable light of early 20th C typescript.  My current thinking is that, if the added capacity comes at a cost of added weight, then a more complex camera is not unambiguously advantageous for most of the shots I might want to take.
