Quick answer to the question. The number of megapixels is not so important for archival research (I have my camera set on the equivalent of about 4 megapixels, though it is capable of 8. Most important is the ISO (higher the better -- mine goes to 1600 -- because of low light in archives) and image stabilization. I have a Canon that does this, but I think there are others as well. Plenty of memory cards, too, is important (I can use nearly 3 GB in a really busy day).
