I have been getting satisfactory performance without going to a high-end camera. I use a Sony Cyber-Shot CDS-W55, which prices below $350. An advantage is that it is small and lightweight and versatile for personal use, too. When taking shots of documents with natural lighting, even in weak lighting, handheld shots usually come out satisfactorily -- although, without tripod, checking for camera shake is a good idea. A must is a high-capacity memory stick or card. 2GB cards are at about $100 now, which is well worth it.
