John,

I'll offer my limited experience: I used a Nikon Coolpix 4300 digital camera for archive work.  Others will probably quote you better equipment (I'm at one of those institutions that, how shall I put it, does not overwhelm their faculty with compensation) but this relatively inexpensive unit gave me very clear usable copies of letters from the U.S. national archives. 

I even took some without a tripod, although I don't necessarily recommend that.  Of course I  had to buy a larger memory stick than what came with the camera.  As I say, others really "into" photography will probably quote you much more sophisticated equipment, but I got passable results and can still eat out once in a while.
