Another good place to get a broad overview of the role of federalism in the
development of America is a book coming out May 1st in both hardback and
paperback from the University of Chicago Press.
Government and the American Economy: A New History.
The book is designed to bring much of the research over the past 30-40
years on the history of government and the American economy to a broad
readership. It tells the chronological story spiced with chapters devoted
to specific topics. The co-authors are Price Fishback, Robert Higgs, Gary
Libecap, John Joseph Wallis, Stanley Engerman, Jeffrey Hummel, Sumner
LaCroix, Robert Margo, Robert McGuire, Richard Sylla, Lee Alston, Joseph
Ferrie, Mark Guglielmo, E.C. Pasour, Jr., Randal Rucker, and Werner Troesken.
One of the key themes of the book is the changing role of the federal,
state, and local governments in the economy over the course of American
history. If you are like me, you have read a large number of the articles
and books written by these scholars. But this is not a collection of
articles. It is a unified book that tells a story. As we worked on the
book, I was amazed at how much new I learned as the authors wove together
their research with the research of other scholars and added numerous
narratives that don't usually show up in most journal articles.
