For Indonesia estimates and 20th century censuses you should try Google's entry: Indonesia
Historical Population. The first item is a table going back for Java estimates to the 17th
century. You can pick up the arguments from there too.
The basic colonial data are in Volume 8 The Changing Economy of Indonesia.
Population Trends 1795-1942. Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam.
Use Google for Malaysia too. It indicates an article in Population Studies. And I guess
for Vietnam, Burma and the Philippines too Google might be a good start.
