Query about Data: Early Censuses and similar data
In a large-scale project which studies the rounding of age heaping (the rounding to
multiples of five, a proxy for numeracy) in many countries of the world, we are looking
references and data:
a) early censuses of countries (and regions), both individual and aggregated. In the
latter population numbers should be reported by single ages, not 5-year-age-groups.
b) even earlier population lists of whole parishes (such as the churches' soul registers),
which also include age statements
c) other sources which report age for subgroups of the population (legal records, military
registers, lists of criminals)
We are especially curious about Near East, Africa, Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe
etc. before 1950, and other Europe/U.S. before 1870. We plan to start in the Middle Ages
or even Antiquity where possible, but most of the data will refer to 17th to 19th
centuries. If you know of any sources, please let us know! You would do us a big favour.
Everything is welcome: references to archival sources, references to printed source
editions, computer tapes and disks, even email attachments. We are happy to send some
working papers for information about the project.
