.

Environmental conditions, standard of living, and sanitary
interventions

Date: 8-9, July 2010
Place: Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Bellaterra-Barcelona

Objective: In this conference we wish to gather researchers who can
bring new evidence and approaches to the study of the first wave of
urban modernization in Spainbefore the Spanish Civil War, related to the
changes observed in the biological standard of living. We will focus our
attention on the period from the second half of the 19th century to the
Second World War. In a future meeting we will deal with changes in the
second half of the 20th century.

Basic structure: the meeting will start with a session on the main
contributions developed at a European level, and then continue with
presentations of papers by guest speakers

Subjects:

1. Food and nutrition, air and water quality; based on data found in
hospitals, schools, or other institutions.

2. The nutritional state of the urban people; mortality, anthropometric
and biometric indicators using medical records and/or data from military
institutions, schools, hospitals and maternity hospitals.

3. Wages and prices, poverty conditions, spatial segregation, and
inequalities in income and/or access to public health, water or the
different kinds and quality of foodstuffs.

4. The conditions of morbidity and mortality in the cities, the
development of new health policies and their impact in feeding, public
hygiene and child development.

Participants:

1. The deadline for paper proposals is July 31st 2009. In September
authors will be informed whether their proposals have been accepted.
These proposals should come with a brief summary (no more than one page)
showing the originality of the sources or the approach suggested, and
should focus on the study of specific towns and/or cities, whatever size
and economic basis they may have, or on a comparative study of different
cases.

2. Accepted papers should not exceed 5,000 words and will need to be
submitted before May 30th, 2010.
