Dear All,
I write to share the sad news that Stanley Lebergott, Chester D. Hubbard
Professor of Economics and Social Sciences, emeritus at Wesleyan University
passed away last week, shortly after his 91st birthday. Stan arrived at
Wesleyan in 1962 and retired in 1988. Prior to coming to Wesleyan, he
worked at the US Department of Labor, the International Labour Office, and
the US Bureau of the Budget. He was the author of seven books, including
Manpower in Economic Growth (1964), Wealth and Want (1975), and Pursuing
Happiness: American Consumers in the Twentieth Century (1993), as well as
many articles. He was a past president of the Economic History Association,
which honored him by conducting a session in his honor at the 2008 EHA
meetings in New Haven. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Ruth
Lebergott, of Middletown, CT, and his daughter Karen, of Chicago.
