CALL FOR PAPERS
A Comparative Approach to Inequality and Development: Latin America and
Europe

Instituto Figuerola, Universidad Carlos III, Madrid
Programme for Comparative Latin American Studies May 8-9, 2009

Organizers:
Luis Bértola (Universidad de la República, Carlos III, and Instituto
Figuerola)
Leandro Prados de la Escosura (Carlos III and Instituto Figuerola)
Jeffrey Williamson (Harvard University and University of Wisconsin)

This Mini-Conference will gather a group of leading scholars in the
field of inequality and development. The main focus of the conference is
to promote a comparative analysis of Latin American inequality: Has
inequality really been a distinctive aspect of Latin American
development for centuries? What form has its inequality taken? How has
inequality been an important factor in explaining relative backwardness?
Comparisons between European and Latin American experience since
pre-industrial times will enrich our understanding of both. The
conference will also favor papers comparing Europe and/or Latin America
with other regions.

Abstracts of no more than 500 words must be sent to lebertola at gmail.com
no later than January 7. The organizers will communicate the acceptance
of the paper proposal by January 21. Completed papers must be delivered
no later than April 1.

Accommodation in Madrid will be covered by the conference. While
participants are encouraged to fund their own travel to Madrid, the
organization will finance a number of airfares for deserving scholars.
The conference is sponsored by the Fundación Areces, Global Euronet and
the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.
