Call for submission of contributions:
Banking in South Africa

The development of financial intermediation has changed substantially
over the last five decades. In South Africa, socio-political changes
have led to structural changes in the banking sector as well as the
delivery of financial services.

The Economic History Society of Southern Africa plans to publish a
special issue of its internationally accredited journal The South
African Journal of Economic History (SAJEH) in 2009 devoted to the
history of banking in South and southern Africa. We are delighted in
announcing that Dr Roger Gidlow, former senior manager of the South
African Reserve Bank (SARB), has accepted the invitation to be the
guest editor for this special issue of the SAJEH.

Topics on which articles will be welcomed are:

* The development of monetary policy since the late 1960s.
* Structural changes in banking since 1970.
* The development of financial services.
* Statutory developments in banking the last fifty years.
* Contributions on specialist banking sectors: merchant banking, bank
assurance, asset management.
* The development of community banking.
* The development of the SARB.
* The development of financial supervision.
* The management of the South African debt moratorium by the financial sector.
* Banking in the SADC region since 1980.
* We would also be interested in considering other topics suggested
by potential authors.

This is a call for submissions by scholars working in this field of
banking and financial history, to submit a proposal for an article in
this special issue of the SAJEH to Prof Grietjie Verhoef, president
of the EHSSA (gverhoef at uj.ac.za).

* Deadline for submissions: 30 September 2008
* Length of submissions: 1500 words, including references.
* The final article should not exceed 8000 words.
* Final full length articles must be submitted on 4 May 2009.

All submissions will be considered by the editorial board of the
SAJEH, in collaboration with Dr Gidlow. The successful submissions
will be notified by 20 October 2008.
