Savings Banks: Main Builders of Europe's Regions
10th European Conference on Savings Banks History
2 October 2008
Hotel Silken Berlaymont, Brussels
Programme
Savings banks have been created during the
industrial revolution in 19th Century Europe, to
offer and economic and social response to the
increasing tension between the social layers of
society. A such, savings banks have been since
their inception integral part of economic and
social progress and development. Their
socio-political commitment, their regional ties
and their business relations, especially with
people on lower incomes, small and medium sized
enterprises and regional and local authorities,
are crucial elements which constitute the
identity of European savings banks. The majority
of the savings banks which were set up, operated
in a geographically limited area.
At this conference, we will demonstrate and
emphasize these specific characteristics of
European savings banks which makes them essential
for Europe's regions.
Since savings banks are embedded and integrated
in society, their role is not only limited to
economical and financial activities. Savings
banks were also found out of humanitarian and
philanthropical motives and considerations. At
this conference we will also demonstrate that the
European savings banks have a deep concern for
the public welfare in all its dimensions, in
history, today and in the future.
