The Great Divergence in Economic History: Gender, Knowledge and
Urbanisation Jan Luiten van Zanden

PhD course in Economic History (3 ECTS) June 2-4, 2008

The Department of Economic History, University of Gothenburg, is
pleased to invite PhD students from the Nordic countries to a course
in Economic History given by Professor Jan Luiten van Zanden and Tine
de Moor. Professor van Zanden is a leading economic historian who has
published a number of influential articles on subjects like progress
and stagnation in pre-modern Europe, comparative living standards in
Europe and Asia, and the economic history of the Netherlands.
Currently he is writing a book with Tine de Moore which takes its
starting point in new growth theory (including unified growth
theory), dealing with the emergence of an industrial society in
Western Europe between 1000 and 1800. This PhD course is based on
this research and consists of three lectures:

Lecture 1. The accumulation of knowledge and human capital formation

Lecture 2. The demographic changes, such as the emergence of the
European Marriage Pattern, and their causes (changes in the position
of women on the labour market)

Lecture 3. Patterns of Urbanisation and their explanation (economic
and/of political institutions)

Course participants are expected to do preparatory reading and take
active part in the lectures. There is however no formal examination.
More detail information on schedule and required reading will be send
to participants.
