Insurance, Sickness and Old Age: Past Experiences and Future Prospects?

This conference will provide an opportunity to present current research on the history of sickness and morbidity.  We are interested in receiving proposals for papers which might address the following issues: the history of sickness insurance; the relationship between age and morbidity; the definition of 'old age'; and the relevance of debates about sickness and working capacity to current debates about pension provision and future trends in health and longevity.

We expect to hold the conference in Southampton on 15-16 April, 2009.

The conference will be funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council as part of an ongoing project entitled 'The Health and Morbidity of Friendly Society Members in the Late-nineteenth and Twentieth centuries' (RES-062-23-0324).  We hope to be able to pay the travel and accommodation expenses of all invited speakers.

If you would like to propose a paper for this meeting, please send a completed proposal (300 words) to Bernard Harris (bjh2 at soton.ac.uk<mailto:bjh2 at soton.ac.uk>).  The deadline for receipt of proposals is 15 September 2008.
