Buying into the World of Goods: Early Consumers in Backcountry Virginia

Ann Smart Martin is the Stanley and Polly Stone Professor of Art
History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she teaches
American decorative arts and material culture and heads the
interdisciplinary material culture program. She is currently a
visiting professor at the Global History and Culture Center at the

How did people living on the early American frontier discover and
then become a part of the market economy? Buying into the World of
Goods, the newest title to appear in the PEAES series published by
Johns Hopkins University Press, reconstructs the lost world of one
country merchant, John Hook, and illuminates relationships among the
storekeeper, his varied customers, and a wide array of commodities.

This event is open to the public free of charge, but space is limited.

To RSVP call 215-546-3181 or email dshapiro at librarycompany.org.
