Transactions and interactions - the flow of goods, services, and information
Imports and exports, wholesale and retail ? what research better
suits a maritime city such as Bergen? Since the industrial revolution
the international trade in goods has grown faster than production of
goods. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has grown even faster than
trade, whilst international trade in services has expanded more
rapidly than FDI. The main topic of our congress thus addresses the
most dynamic part of the economy.
The development is evident inside enterprises as well: During the
19th century on-lookers were amazed how much faster the number of
white-collar workers grew compared with blue-collar workers. Today,
many manufacturing firms employ more of the latter than of the
former. The flow and monitoring of information, control and advice
have become ever more important, within as well as outside the
enterprise. The flow of information is not only essential for the
stock exchange, but for example for shipping, hospitals,
retail-trade, fire-brigades, or taxation. It includes the development
and protection of ideas, networks and intangible assets (e.g. trade
marks).
Interesting topics can be found within businesses, within countries
or between countries, but also in the interaction between politics
and economics. Well-designed suggestions on other fields of research
are also welcome.
Although priority will be given to papers embracing these themes and
closely related topics, EBHA conferences also accept papers outside
the theme of the conference.
We invite to submit suggestions for papers as well as sections until
31 January 2008.
