SETTLERS SOCIETIES IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE 
WORLD: A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE (19TH AND 20TH 
CENTURIES)

ABSTRACT

The objective of the symposium is to discuss from 
a comparative perspective the performance of the 
new settlement societies in Latin America 
(Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, South of Brazil) and 
other regions of the world (Australia, Canada, 
New Zealand, USA, South Africa). The analytical 
category "new settlement societies" (or, in 
brief, settlers) refers to economies that in the 
19th Century were based on a small indigenous 
population, large scale European immigration and 
land abundance. They achieved a dynamic 
international insertion as exporters of raw 
materials and temperate agricultural goods in the 
first globalization era, which was the basis of 
their high levels of income per capita - in some 
cases, among the highest in the world.

Papers with a focus on the specific features of 
the new settlement societies in the Latin 
American context, that contribute to explain why 
they lagged behind, will be particularly welcome. 
These features may be related to different 
institutional arrangements, different productive 
structure and specialization patterns, the 
influence of economic cycles, income distribution 
and the international migration of factors of 
production. The symposium aims to include 
contributions coming from very different and 
theoretical and methodological approaches, which 
would offer a rich and comprehensive basis for 
the debate on the relative performance of the new 
settlement societies in the world.

RESUMEN

El simposio busca reunir trabajos que comparen el 
desempeño de las sociedades de colonización 
reciente de América Latina (Argentina, Chile, 
Uruguay, sur de Brasil) con los settlers -en su 
voz inglesa- de otras partes del mundo 
(Australia, Canadá, Nueva Zelanda, Estados 
Unidos, Sudáfrica). La categoría analítica 
"sociedades de colonización reciente" refiere a 
aquellos países que en el siglo XIX contaron con 
escasa población originaria, un intenso flujo de 
inmigración europea, abundancia de recursos 
naturales, escasez relativa de mano de obra, y se 
insertaron en el mercado internacional como 
productores de materias primas, basando en este 
patrón de especialización sus altos niveles de 
ingresos per capita en la primera globalización 
del capitalismo. Serán bienvenidos muy 
particularmente los trabajos que enfaticen las 
peculiaridades de los settlers en el contexto de 
América Latina y destaquen los factores propios 
de la región que habrían condicionado un 
desempeño menos exitoso en el largo plazo en 
relación a los settlers de otras regiones. El 
análisis de los factores que condicionaron el 
desempeño económico de estas sociedades de nuevo 
asentamiento puede estar asociado a diferencias 
institucionales, al tipo de especialización 
productiva y comercial, a los ciclos económicos, 
a la distribución del ingreso, a los movimientos 
de precios de los factores productivos, entre 
otros. Se procurará el más amplio abordaje 
teórico y metodológico, en sintonía con los 
esfuerzos de síntesis disciplinar característicos 
de los estudios sobre las sociedades de reciente 
colonización realizados desde la historia

cumplimiento de este plazo es indispensable para 
incorporar los trabajos al CD del Congreso y para
