Abstract:
A history dating the rise of the market - which interested John Hicks
- is distinct from analyzing changes in the performance and
efficiency of markets in history, which is the subject of this paper.
The paper reviews some of my recently published material on market
performance and then presents new results from work in progress. It
documents the long history of the establishment of the law of one
price in international wheat markets and the spectauclar changes in
the speed of price adjustments over long stretches of time.
