Abstract:
This book is the result of a work integrated into the broader
research programme on education and economic growth launched by Louis
Fontvieille at the Economic Department of the University of
Montpellier. Following previous quantitative history studies of this
link with respect to France and Germany, a research in a British
context was a logical step to this long-term international comparison
of economic growth and education. In order to collect the figures and
to investigate a very active economic history debate about
educational issues, I spent two years as a researcher at the
Institute of Education of London. This book is an attempt to show the
value of a cross-disciplinary approach to study the relationship
between education and economic growth. On the one hand a quantitative
history about the UK public educational system since 1833 is provided
(a comprehensive statistical inventory of expenditure and enrolment
on education closes the book). On the other, economic theory, with
particular reference to the Kondratiev cycles, is employed in an
attempt to relate such expenditure to economic performance. This book
aims at providing a better understanding of the past of the UK public
educational systems and at supplying data for an examination of
current educational and economic policy.
