Abstract:
NEW APPROACHES TO REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT: SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA PROJECT
(GAP) IN TURKEY
The Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP), which is one of the most
important development projects in the world, is a popular subject in
both Turkey and especially in Southeastern Anatolia Region. Because
the region is an underdeveloped region and possesses unvalued rich
sources, the importance of the GAP Project is increasing.
In this study, the region of Southeastern Anatolia and the GAP
Project will be introduced in brief before discussing the stages of
the project and the anticipated results. Furthermore, I discuss some
aspects of the GAP Project that have been reevaluated under the
concept of sustainability in recent years.
In the first section, the chronological (historical) development of
the GAP Project and its stages will be discussed. In the second
section, the GAP Project will be examined as a regional development
project within the framework of sustainability.
In this study, by estimating the possible results of the GAP Project,
the contributions of the project to social and economic aspects of
the country and region will be developed.
