Abstract:
One of the main problems of the Italian economy in the second half of
the 1930s was the shortage of hard currencies (currency gap). In
fact, since the 1935 currency crisis, the currencies gap became
dramatic for the Italian economy and it induced Fascism to adopt
drastic measures of exchange control and economic policy aimed at
achieving economic independence (autarchia). This paper demonstrates
the importance of the currency factor in limiting the economic
potentialities of Italy in the first half of the XX century. By
reconstructing the phases of the 1935 currency crisis, we also
analyze the consequences that the currency crisis had on the Italian
economy in the late 1930s. Finally, the currency gap problem will be
analysed in an historical perspective using Italian experience as a
relevant case study.
