Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of World War I on the macroeconomic
distribution of income and particularly on profits using an up to now
neglected source: the archives on the tax on extraordinary profits
created during the war, which give firm-level details on accounting
procedures and taxation methods. It suggests that the joint
development of this tax (which was the first in France on business
profits) and of accounting methods (especially for the measure of
fiscal depreciation allowances) are very likely to have produced an
overall overtaxation of profits, although the effects varied heavily
among industries.
