Abstract:
This discussion paper analyses the commercial relationships between home
producers and city-based merchants within the framework of the theory of
institutional economics. For the regions, which lagged behind the
West-European industrializing countries, it was important at which moment
the institutional barriers of preindustrial times were removed. The
Silesian case shows that the lack of institutional modernization could have
negative effects on the development of the region. In contrast to the
Western development, Silesia de-industrialized during the 19th century.
