University Location and Description
Located about 50km from Stuttgart, in Southern Germany, Tuebingen is a pleasant old town
looking back on more than 525 years of university history. Althoughthe city is rather
small (only 80,000 inhabitants), the high percentage of students (20%) as well as numerous
leisure activities contribute to its open character. In a survey, Tuebingen was elected
as the city with the highest quality of life in Germany. Nearby (only 30 km or 20 minutes
away) is the University of Hohenheim. We work in close cooperation with its economic
history research group.

General Department Information
The department is specialized in four research fields:
1. Biological Standard of Living: Important biological components of the standard
of living, such as nutritional status (anthropometric history), morbidity and longevity,
and their interaction with economic development are one of the central fields of study.
Past research has focused on a large geographical area and temporal scope. Included were
European countries, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the recent past of developing countries,
as well as the Roman Empire.
2. Economic History of Firms: We consider the causes and consequences of the creation,
productivity, success and mergers & acquisitions of firms in19th- and 20th-century Germany.
In cooperation with other German universities we also analyse German patent data to estimate
the benefits of basic innovations on the company, branch and aggregate levels.
3. Multimedia and Economic History: New multimedia techniques provide a powerful tool to
facilitate the access to quantitative (cliometric) methods, assisting students in learning
and lecturers in preparing their courses. Currently, the department is part of an international
team working to produce a CD-lecture on European Economic History. The CD also includes
"natural" experiments in the classroom, as a means to evaluate its success compared with
lectures of the traditional type.
4. Human capital formation and growth around the world
All the members of the department apply statistical methods and economic theory to economic
history ("cliometrics"). This ensures large positive externalities within the research group.
