Stanford University offers a PhD program in economics.
Short History of the Program
Graduate study in economics at Stanford, including economic history, goes
back to early in the century.
Students
Currently 5-7 students in the economics graduate program specialize in economic
history; students in other departments such as Political Science and History
often pursue thesis topics in closely related areas. In the past five years,
four students have completed dissertations in economic history, seven in the
past ten years. Stanford students have found placement at various research
economics departments, the Harvard Business School, liberal arts colleges and in
non-academic research positions.
Faculty
Currently there are three economics faculty members who carry out research in
economic history: Avner Greif, Gavin Wright, and Ran Abramitzky. Recent emeriti
still active in the field include Paul David and Nathan Rosenberg. Social
scientists with historical interests in other departments include Stephen Haber
and Barry Weingast.

Required Courses in Economic History
Economic History is part of the Ph.D. program in Economics. To
complete the Economic History/Institutions field, two of the above courses are a
minimum; three are encouraged.
Seminar Series
There is the Social Science History Workshop Seminar, which meets
once a week during the terms, jointly with students and faculty from other
departments.
