Newark International Airport. There is easy access to buses and trains.
Type of Degree Offered
Rutgers offers the M.A. and Ph.D.
Short History of the Program
In 1906-07, the first "economics" course was offered at Rutgers University in
the Department of History and Political Science. This was a course on the
history and nature of economics. Economics was established as a separate
discipline in the beginning of the 1920s and was independently organized in
1923-24.
The first courses to be offered on a graduate level at Rutgers University were
in the History of Economic Thought, Economic Theory and an Economics seminar in
1923-24. Until 1950, the only graduate degree in economics was the Master of
Arts. The Ph.D. program in economics was started shortly after World War II.
In June 1955, the first Ph.D. degrees were awarded. Although the program
requires rigorous preparation in mainstream economics, Rutgers has long had a
strong belief that training in economic history is important for the
development of a well-rounded economist. Arcadius Kahan, a distinguished
economic historian who taught Russian economic history at the University of
Chicago for many years, was one of the first Ph.D.s.
