University Location and Description
The Ohio State University is located in Columbus, Ohio, which is the 15th
largest city in the U.S. Ohio State is alarge state university that offers
courses of study in many academic and professional fields including arts and
sciences, law, medicine, business, pharmacy, and engineering.
Type of Degree Offered
PhD with a field in economic history.
Short History of the Program
The program began around 1970 with the hiring of two faculty. A third
faculty member is scheduled to be hired in 2001.
Students
The number of graduate students has fluctuated considerably over time.
About 30 students are accepted into the entire Economics graduate program
each year, and approximately 10 to 12 receive PhDs each year. In the past
5 years, 2 students have completed degrees in economic history: Sonali
Garg (now at Queens in New York City) and William White (now at the
Research Triangle Institute). Three students are currently working on
dissertations.

Seminar Series
There is no seminar that specializes in the field per se, but economic
historians are regularly incorporated into the regular seminars in macro
and micro. The All-Ohio Economic History Seminar meets twice a year.
General Department Information
85 graduate students and 35 faculty. The Department is ranked from 24th to
34th among all U.S. Economics Departments (public and private schools),
depending upon the metric (publications or opinion surveys).
