Short History of the Program

Northwestern University's program in Economics has trained Ph.D. students in  
Economic History for more than fifty years. It has numbered among its Economic  
History faculty two presidents of the Economic History Association and editors  
of the Journal of Economic History. Its students teach today at several  
prominent universities, including Yale, Stanford, Michigan, and Washington  
University,

Ranking: The Department of Economics at Northwestern University is among the  
best in the United States. U.S. News and World Report ranked Northwestern  
eighth overall in economics graduate programs and third in industrial organization, 
sixth in microeconomic theory, and ninth in macroeconomics. The department also  
maintains considerable strengths in labor economics, economic history, economic 
theory and the economics of transportation and regulation. A recent study in  
the Journal of Economic Perspectives ranked the department number five for  
publications in the eight most-cited academic journals during 1990-94. In  
addition, the list of the top 50 most productive faculty members over the  
period included eight people with current or former Northwestern affiliations.
