General Department Information
There is an active graduate program in economic history at the University
of Munich. The current topics being worked on include anthropometric
history, the biological standard of living, conceptualizations of the
industrial revolution, growth models as applied to the industrial
revolution, firm creation in late 19th century Germany, the economic
background to the Nazi ascendancy to power, path-dependence, social
history of hospitals, history of morbidity, and German demographic
history. Visitors from abroad are frequently invited to enhance the
intellectual climate. These have included not only such well-known
scholars as Lee Craig (NC State), Michael Haines (Colgate), Richard
Steckel (OSU), Richard Sylla (NYU), Gavin Wright (Stanford) to name just a
few, but Nobel-prize winning economic historians Douglass North and Robert
Fogel as well. A post-doctoral program rounds out the activities and
offerings of the center.
Short History of the Program
The program has been in existence since the 1920s. It has been directed by
Professors John Komlos and Reinhard Spree since 1992.
Students
In the past five years three students have completed a dissertation in
Economic History, including Joerg Baten, whose thesis on the Anthropometric
history of Bavaria won the annual prize of the alumni association.. They
have found jobs in business, and academia. Post-doctoral fellow Brian
A'Hearn (Ph.D. Berkeley) is now at Franklin and Marshall College. Ulrich Woitek
is at the University of Zürich and Douglas Puffert (Ph.D. Stanford) is at the
University of Leeds.

Fellowships
There is a fellowship available for two years at about 10,000 euros per
year.
