The society was formed in 1970 to encourage the study of
economic and social history. It acts to bring together those actively
engaged in research and teaching at every level. It also:
* organises an annual conference
* publicises archival accessions and developments
* publishes a pamphlet series
* issues an annual journal
* offers a link to the web site of the American Conference on Irish Studies.
