Abstract:
This historical account of a few key diseases and pests in the
formative years of California horticulture sheds light on the
unusually successful, innovative, and productive research and
outreach programs in the public and private sectors. For crop after
crop, farmers and scientists and government agencies overcame the
"free rider" problem to literally save large-scale commercial
agriculture.
