Abstract:
Juan de Mariana S.J. published his "De Monetae Mutatione" in 1609. It
was the first attempt at developing a full-fledged analysis of
inflation within a quasi-fiat monetary standard. In this paper, we
model a trimetallic - gold, silver, and copper - monetary standard in
order to shed light on Mariana's theoretical contribution.
Interestingly, its theoretical conclusions are backed by the findings
of our model as well as they were ex-post by the vellon inflation in
17th century Castile.
