Madeira is one of the Portuguese regions with a very old Tourism industry. In this paper we shall analyse the beginning of this industry and its development, and we shall explain the characteristics of this industry between 1850 and 1914. We will also show that it's importance it is not only due to the economic significance of this sector in this period but to its capacity to adapt its image and offer of services.
