Description: L'américanisation, en tant que processus historique, gagne de plus en plus d'intérêt auprès des historiens contemporains. Le point de départ de ce processus se situe au niveau de la révolution des transports lors des années 1870-1880. Pendant que cette révolution provoqua une crise dans l'industrie de l'agriculture en Europe, ceci entraîna aux Etats-unis l'émergence d'une consommation de masse. Les Etats-Unis ont alors pris un rôle décisif dans l'économie mondiale, la guerre de 1914-1918 les renforcant dans ce rôle. Alors que le modèle américain s'établit en tant que point de référence, la crise de 1929 en montre les limites.
La seconde guerre mondiale a su restimuler l'économie américaine, tout en démontrant la supériorité incontestable du modèle américain. Le rôle joué par les Etats-Unis dans la reconstruction européenne, mais également dans l'économie mondiale, a aiguillé le chemin vers le développement pour les pays d'Europe de l'Ouest et le Japon en entraînant des gains de productivité. Cette reconstruction s'est basée sur le développement de la consommation de masse et l'adoption du modèle de gestion américain, même si les Etats-Unis ont sû maintenir leur leadership grâce à leurs efforts en R&D.
Trois problèmatiques ont été posées:
1/ L'importance des échanges commerciaux comme impact à l'américanisation: étude des flux de migration (émigrés internationaux) et des flux de marchandises (commerce), mais également de la révolution des systèmes d'information (nouveaux médias et technologie de l'information) et des flux de capitaux d'investissement.
2/ La diffusion du modèle américain : l'émergence d'une nouvelle gestion d'entreprise, du modèle de consommation de masse (avec l'importance et la croissance de la publicité, du marketing et des techniques de ciblage) et du rattrapage des niveaux de productivités américaines.
3/ L'équivalence d'autres modèles : dans quelle mesure y a-t-il eu un processus d'Européanisation ? (ou de Germanisation ? de Franconisation ? Italianisation ?) Japanisation (Toyautisme) ou de Soviétisation (avant 1989) ?
