Description: Les frontières et les régions frontalières sont des zones particulièrement intéressantes dans le processus de construction des nations européennes au 19ème siècle. Néanmoins c'est un thème encore trop négligé par la recherche, plus particulièrement en histoire économique. Après 1918, de nouvelles barrières et de nouvelles frontières furent érigées: la Tchécoslovaquie, la Pologne, la Hongrie et les Etats Baltes. L'Europe de l'Est fût le principal théâtre de nombreux conflits entre les peuples de ces régions, dont la plupart d'entre eux connurent de nombreuses difficultés. Ces problèmes économiques et sociaux furent encore plus nombreux et plus vifs après la deuxième guerre mondiale, ce phénomène étant dû à l'autarcie connue par ces pays du COMECON. Les aspects historiques arriveront peut-être à expliquer les futurs problèmes des candidats de l'Est à leur intégration dans l'Union Européenne.
