Letter of Welcome

XIII International Economic History Congress of the International Economic History Association

July 15, 1999
Buenos Aires, Argentina

Dear Future Congress Participants,

In August, 1998 the Assembly of national associations held in Madrid unanimously approved that the XIII International Economic History Congress of the International Economic History Association (IEHA) would take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It will be carried out on 22-26 July 2002, according to the Executive Committee's decision based on the Reform Committee's meeting in May, 1999.

The Organizing Committee of the XIII Congress is opening this page in order to keep future participants informed with regard to the forum's preparation and realization through this Website.

Economic historians will be able not only to get information about the unrolling stages of the Congress but also maintain an open and fluid communication with the Local Organizing Committee, the Secretary General, and the sessions' Organizers and Collaborators.

Through this medium, suggestions, ideas and enquiries any participant may submit will be recorded. At the same time, information (preparation, coordination, academic programme) on the sessions will be available in due time.

Moreover, the Organizing Committee is working on the following XIII Congress issues: financing and discounts on accommodation and travel costs. Further details on this and on the city of Buenos Aires can be consulted in the Main page.

The scientific programme was discussed by the Executive Committee in its meeting in May in Riverside, California, taking into account the recommendations of the Reform Committee's meeting held in Utrecht in December, 1998. The Executive Committee has approved a new format of the sessions (Regular and by Invitation of the Executive Committee) in replacement of their current hierarchical structure (A, B, D, D, and E sessions), retaining the dissertation sessions. Most sessions will be Regular Sessions selected from those proposed in answer to two separate calls for proposals. The Executive Committee has already selected 41 session proposals out of 65 submitted by the first call.

The preparation of the scientific programme of the Congress is the responsibility of the IEHA Executive Committee, while the Organizing Committee is in charge of the logistic organization and coordination. The latter is presided over by the IEHA President, and representatives of Brazil and Uruguay act as Vice Presidents.

The organization of the XIII Congress is in charge of the Universidad de San Andrés and supported by the Academia Nacional de la Historia, the national associations of Economic History of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. It was declared of 'National Interest' in the resolution 390/98 by the Presidency of Argentina. The Congress sponsors are the Inter American Development Bank, the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic, and the Banco Hipotecario Nacional.

The Organizing Committee welcomes all the XIII IEHA Congress participants who will meet in Argentina and Latin America for the first time. Undoubtedly, it will be an enriching opportunity to exchange academic research experiences and to visit one of the biggest cities in South America. Buenos Aires is a great metropolis with an exciting cultural life. We, the Organizing Committee, hope that, in addition to the benefits of active involvement in the academic sessions, participants will enjoy an unforgettable stay in the city in which Argentinians take pride. We will keep in contact and hope to meet you in Buenos Aires in 2002.

The Local Organizing Committee,

Roberto Cortés Conde, Chairman, IEHA President
