Description:This session will study how a tourist industry was formed and how it developed. Three aspects will be developped in a comparative approach: technology, politics and economy.

1. The technological aspect will be studied in the following ways :

  • tourism and transport
  • development of welcome structures (construction and management of hotels, restaurants, cafes, buffets, trains stations, etc.)
  • development of tourist attractions (making of walking paths, construction of alpine huts, navigation of the lakes and rivers, opening of casinos, creation of cultural activites, etc.)
  • development of guide-books (and all tourist litterature)
  • development of travel agencies and tour operators
2. Concerning the tourist policies, we will consider :
  • the role of public authorities (at national, regional and local level)
  • the role of tourist offices
  • the role of railway companies, airways companies, navigation companies, bus companies, etc
3. Concerning the economic aspect, we will study
  • the flow of tourists
  • the social origins of tourists
  • the economic impact of tourism at various levels
