Description: Many scholars are rethinking the timing and causes of the large differences in per capita income and standard of living between several North Atlantic countries and the rest of the world that emerged by roughly 1860. This panel concentrates on the XVIIIth and early XIXth centuries but aims to place the period within longer trajectories, and identify measurements that can clarify actual moments and sources of continuity and discontinuity. Papers will be either comparative, systemic (treating multiple regions as an interacting whole) or both, and touch on various regions across Eurasia.

Participants: Kuroda Akinobu (Tokyo University), Patrick O'Brien (Oxford/LSE), Prasannan Parthasarathi (Boston University), Kenneth Pomeranz (University of California, Irvine), Kaoru Sugihara (Osaka University), Jan Luiten van Zanden (University of Utrecht).
