Description: It is arguable that the literature on early-modern monetary history is at the forefront in terms of moving economic history in the direction of true global history. It was the market for a monetary substance - silver - which transformed Ming China's economy, creating lucrative market opportunities in the heart of Asia. It was this Chinese marketplace which provoked activity in American and Japanese mines and induced worldwide trade by European and non-European merchants alike. Other important monetary substances - gold, copper, and cowries - were likewise traded globally throughout the 16th through 18th centuries. This is the central message to emerge from the B6 Session of the IEHA congress in Madrid in 1998.
