The logo of the Congress includes a caravel in allusion to the arrival of the Spanish colonizers to the River Plate; the Potosi Hill, that stands for the relevance the silver exploitation in the Alto Peru had for colonial economy, and a couple of wheat spikes indicating the importance of the agricultural activities in modern Argentina.
The XIIIth Congress of the International Economic History Association (IEHA) will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 22-26 July, 2002. It has been declared an event of "national interest" through Resolution Nº 390/98 issued by the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Argentine Nation. The Universidad de San Andrés is in charge of the organization of the Congress and has been granted support by several academic institutions such as the Academia Nacional de la Historia and the national economic history associations of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The Interamerican Development Bank, the Banco Central de la República Argentina and the Banco Hipotecario are among the sponsors of the Congress.
The Executive Committee of the IEHA is responsible for the preparation of the scientific programme of the Congress, while the Local Organizing Committee is in charge of the logistic coordination and the organization of the event. The Congress is presided over by the President of the IEHA, while representatives from Brazil and Uruguay have a position as Vice-Presidents.
In this first brochure, the provisional program of the XIIIth Congress is presented, listing the sessions that have been selected after the first Call for Sessions. Those interested in participating in any of the sessions are requested to directly contact the corresponding organizer. Other inquiries concerning scientific issues may be submitted either to Prof. Jan Luiten van Zanden, Secretary General of the International Economic History Association, or to the Scientific Secretariat of the Congress. Their addresses appear on page 33 of this brochure.
In the following pages, general information is provided on the organization of the Congress. The second brochure, to be delivered in October 2001, will contain details on the application, the final scientific programme and further information on other Congress-related matters. It will only be delivered to those who have submitted the provisional application form included herein. The proposals corresponding to the second Call for Sessions may be submitted until 15 April, 2001.
The International Economic History Association, which unites national and regional associations, was set up to develop and maintain personal contacts among economic and social historians of all countries. The IEHA Congress, held every four years, aims at the presentation of research results and the promotion of international cooperation in the study of economic history.

Dissertation Sessions
Competition for recently completed doctoral theses
Young scholars are invited to present summaries of their doctoral research at the XIIIth
Congress of the International Economic History Association, which will be held at
Buenos Aires in July 2002.
The XIIIth Congress will offer four dissertation prizes. A call for submission of dissertations
will be issued in early 2000 with a deadline for submission on 15 April, 2001. The
presentations will be held for the different periods: Ancient and Medieval; Early Modern;
Modern before World War I, and Modern after World War I. We expect summaries of the
dissertations to be published in a conference volume.
To be eligible for these sessions candidates must have been awarded their doctorate
or equivalent after 1 January, 1997 and not later than 31 December, 2000.
Young scholars interested in participating in these sessions should write without delay
to Prof. Dr. Jan Luiten van Zanden (address below).
They should specify the title of the thesis, the names of the supervisor and jury members,
and the institution that awarded the degree. Please do not send the theses.

Registration fees will be announced in the second brochure. Both students and all
those registering before 31 October, 2001 will be able to do so at a reduced rate.
In addition, a number of grants for students and for participants coming from
developing countries will be available. Since their number will be limited, participants
should look for other sources of funding for Congress participation.
Provisional registration
All those who want to participate in the Congress or simply wish to receive the more
detailed brochure in 2001 should preregister through the webpage. Otherwise, they

Support system through Internet
This brochure is also available via Internet at the XIIIth Congress webpage, where
it will be regularly updated. Registration will be possible from the Congress page.
If you wish to receive ongoing information by electronic mail, please include your
