Congress Information List Posting: Introduction to Reports of Madrid Congress Meetings
David Mitch, University of Maryland-Baltimore County

10 September 1998
Some subscribers to the Congress list who were not planning to attend the Madrid Congress expressed interest in seeing reports on the General Assembly meeting and the discussion that occurred regarding cancellation of the Seville Congress and the shift to Madrid. I attended the Information session which was held on Wed. August 26 in which Gabriel Tortella presented an account of the factors behind the cancellation of the Seville Congress and in which various members of the audience offered comments and discussion. On Friday, August 28 I attended the IEHA General Assembly Meeting and the Madrid Congress Closing Session, at which a number of announcements were made regarding the reform committee which has been established and about plans for the 13th Congress. I took notes on all three sessions. I am posting reports to the Congress list on all three sessions.

These reports will be sent in 4 parts:
1) Report on Tortella's opening statement at the Wed. Information Session.
2) Comments and Discussion from the Floor at the Wed. Information Session.
3) Report on the IEHA
General Assembly meeting.
4) Report on the 12th Congress Closing session.

These reports are based on the notes I took at the meeting and are intended to convey a sense of what was said and discussed. They do not constitute a complete or literal transcription of what was said. I have received valuable assistance from others in reviewing the reports for accuracy and in providing numerous points for correction and inclusion. These reports are unofficial. I have received no authorization from the IEHA Bureau, Executive Committee, or General Assembly to prepare or disseminate these reports. I welcome any points of correction, addition or any alternative accounts of these events.

The reports are long. These reports are also available in the Archive for the Congress list. David Mitch
