Call for Host Cities
for the
XIVth World Economic History Congress 2006
of the
International Economic History Association

The International Economic History Association (IEHA) is the international organization in the field of economic history which coordinates the activities of about forty national associations of economic historians. Its main activity is the organization of the World Economic History Congress, which is held every four years; the XIIIth Congress will be organized in Buenos Aires in 2002. The number of participants varies from 1,000 to 1,600.

In 1999 preparations for the organization of the XIVth World Economic History Congress of 2006 will begin. The Executive Committee of the IEHA therefore invites potential host cities and local organizers to suggest venues for the organizing of the congress in 2006 to the Secretary General:

Submissions are due before December 31, 1999.

According to the report of the commission on reform, which has been discussed by the Executive Committee in its meeting in May 1999, the procedure for selecting host cities will be as follows. In 1999 proposals for nominating host cities can be submitted. In order to clarify them and make them comparable, these proposals will be the subject of talks between the Bureau, represented by the Secretary General, and local organizers who would take on the task of coordinating the local arrangements. This will result in one or perhaps a number of proposals for the host city of 2006. These proposals will include: a budget for the Congress, the names of the local organizing committee and the name of the person who will be primarily responsible for the organization of the Congress in 2006. This person may or may not be a member of the current Executive Committee. At its meeting in 2001 the Executive Committee will then select the host city for the XIVth World Economic History Congress, a choice which has to be confirmed by the General Assembly in its meeting in 2002.

For further details on the proposed procedure for selecting host cities, you might consult the Report of the Reform Commission published on this web site.
